| There are many reasons to grow annuals: they make lovely cut flowers, they add color to the garden, or because they are so easy to grow. Perhaps the best reason, though, is the joy one gets from starting a tiny seed that produces a full-grown plant in a single season. Annuals bloom continuously, and, unlike other plants, which store up energy in their roots and rise from those roots again, annuals live and die in one season. To perpetuate themselves, they produce great quantities of seeds. In order to produce those seeds, an annual must produce many flowers, and if those flowers are cut before the seeds are formed, the plant will try again and again. The more you cut an annual, the more it blooms. Being temporary plants, annuals are welcome fill-ins in the garden where permanent plantings have not yet grown large enough to be effective. |
