Heliotropium

Although heliotropes grow year round as perennial shrubs in their native peru, they serve as annual flowers in North American gardens. Plants are 1 to 2 feet tall, depending upon the strain, and bear flower clusters as large as 1 foot in diameter, in dark violet and white in addition to the renowned heliotrope blue. Their fragrance, once experienced, is never forgotten, whether it is the sweet vanilla scent of the common heliotrope or the heavy narcissuslike scent of the big heliotropes.
Heliotropes make colorful as well as fragrant plants for borders, window boxes, and terrace pots. They bring the same assets to fresh-cut bouquets. Garden-grown heliotropes require a rich soil in full sun, but when grown in pots they do best in places where they get a bit of shade during the hot part of the day.
Start seeds indoors in midwinter, or buy seedlings in the spring. Space plants 1 foot apart.
