Ipomoea alba

Moonflowers are twining climbers with large heart-shaped leaves and white trumpetlike blossoms, as large as 6 inches across, that open at sunset; the flowers usually close before noon the next day but remain open longer in cloudy weather. Moonflowers add to their visual beauty with a heavy fragrance on summer evenings. Though they are perennials in their native tropics and in Florida, they are grown as annuals in Zones 3-8.
Because they climb rapidly--10 feet or more in a single season--moonflowers make excellent screens. They will grow in average soil in full sun. To speed germination, soak the seeds in water overnight before sowing them. When night temperatures will not drop below 50 degress, plant seedlings outdoors, 9 to 12 inches apart, with an 8 to 10 foot trellis or string for them to climb. Moonflowers will also climb fences and porch railings.
