![]() Petunia |
| If an indespensable flower exists, it is probably the petunia, a native of South America, which adapts to almost every climatic condition and grows in an extraordinary variety of sizes, colors, and shapes of blossoms. There are dwarf types 6-8 inches tall, and others that exceed one foot. The last few years has seen the introduction of the 'Wave' petunia. Available in a limited number of colors presently, this petunia's growth habits are sure to set it as the standard in coming years. Until the introduction of the 'Wave' petunia, the F1 hybrids were the most reliable and widely sold and grown petunias. Use petunias in garden beds, baskets, and containers. Sow seeds indoors in containers of potting soil covered with sphagnum moss eight to ten weeks before the last frost is due. Since the seeds are very tiny, they fall into the crevices in the moss and need not be covered. When seedlings develop 3 or 4 leaves, transplant them to individual 2 to 3 inch pots. They may do better in a cold frame than in a warm room, for petunias are healthiest when they grow to the budding stage at a temperature of about 55 degrees. Plant them outdoors in full sun 8 to 12 inches part when all frost danger has passed. Keep soil moist, but well drained |
