Verbena

These tender hybrid perennials, treated as annuals, spread as they grow and produce a multitude of flowers in their first season. Upright-growing strains make mounds about a food high, while carpeting varieties creep along the gound. The delightfully fragrant verbena flowers bloom in flat clusters 2 to 3 inches across and range in color from snowy white to pink, red, blue, lavender, and purple. Many of the colored flowers have contrasting white centers.
Since verbenas provide solid masses of color they are good choices for ground covers, for garden beds and edgings, or for any location where a low carpet of color is needed. Verbena is also attractive in rock gardens and in window boxes. Plants require full sun and fertile soil.
Sow verbena seeds indoors about three months before the last frost is due. Move seedlings into the garden when night temperatures remain above 50 degrees F, spacing them 1 foot apart. Or buy started plants. In frost-free areas of Zones 9-10, garden verbenas may act as perennials, but they are usually renewed from seeds each year because old plants become straggly.
