Mess 4/29/04. Here's what the edge of the back yard looked like before we went to work on it.
More mess 4/29/04. Another view--a real mess.
And more mess 4/29/04. Another view.
Yet more mess 4/29/04. And yet another.
First beds 5/4/04. First row of beds well under way. The existing front bed needed to be moved a few inches so I emptied it to make that easier.
Plants dug up 5/8/04. Here are the plants I took out of that bed waiting to be replanted.
Beds done 5/8/04. First set of beds and walkways done.
Another view 5/8/04. Another view of those beds.
Replanted 5/8/04. Planting started.
Camoflage 5/8/04. Trying a large potted plant to hide the black drainage pipe.
Next set 5/8/04. Next set of beds started.
Bed done 5/9/04. First bed of this set done; it looks like it's not level but it is. Camera angle or optical illusion due to all the different angles, apparently.
Second one 5/9/04. Second bed started.
Second bed done 5/10/04. Second bed done, and wooden walkway framed out.
Another view 5/10/04. Another view of this section.
And yet another 5/10/04. Another view of the wooden walkway.
Second section done 5/10/04. Beds of this section filled and ready for planting.
Walkway done 5/11/04. Walkway finished.
Another view 5/11/04. Another view of walkway.
And another 5/11/04. And another.
Compost bin down 5/14/04. We emptied the compost bins so we could adjust their position a bit.
Walkway 5/14/04. Framework for a little walkway beside the compost bin completed and filled, ready to have pavers placed. We had all these pavers on hand so decided to use them.
Compost base 5/14/04. Base for compost bin is firmed up and ready to have the bins replaced.
Clowning around 5/14/04. John, clowning around.
Bins done 5/14/04. Bins in place and ready to have compost replaced.
Compost back 5/14/04. Compost back in bin.
Walkway done 5/14/04. Walkway finished.
Another view 5/14/04. Another view.
Another walkway 5/15/04. Paver walkway on the other side of the compost bins finished.
Wooden walk extended 5/15/04. Wooden walkway extended.
Another view 5/15/04. Another view.
Backside 5/15/04. A back view of this stage. Not pretty, but stick around; it will be.
Future Pier 5/17/04. Here's where the pier is going to go.
Retaining wall 5/17/04. We needed to fill in a bit to help support the posts. This is a "retaining wall" for that purpose.
Fill-in 5/17/04. Old bricks, etc., form the base of the fill-in; we'll add soil later.
Posts 5/17/04. Posts cemented into place. We have to wait at least 24 hours for the concrete to set up.
Side joists 5/19/04. Side joists in place.
Frame done 5/19/04. Framework for the pier is completed.
Boards on 5/20/04. Boards in place.
Another view 5/20/04. Another view.
Filled in 5/22/04. Hard to see due to glare, but soil has been filled in. At this point we had not planned on the fence; I was planning on planting something like ditch lilies in these spaces on either side of the pier.
Last set 5/22/04. First of the last set of beds built and ready to place.
Second bed done 5/22/04. Second bed of this section built and ready to be put in place.
Beds in 5/24/04. Both beds placed and stabilized.
Support 5/24/04. We used heavy fence posts driven deep to help support the beds.
Walkway in 5/25/04. Paver walkway between the beds is in. Yeah, we know it's not level and we'll have to work on that.
Beds lined 5/26/04. Beds lined with hardware cloth (all the rest were, too), to keep out the voles, and ready to fill with soil.
Beds filled 5/26/04. Beds filled and ready for planting.
Planted and mulched 6/6/04. First set of beds planted and mulched.
Planted and mulched 6/6/04. Second set planted and mulched.
Planted and mulched 6/20/04. And so is the third set.
New bed 6/30/04. Squeezing an extra bed between the fence and the second set of beds.
Another one 6/30/04. And one between the fence and the compost bins.
Another one 6/30/04. Another view.
Pipe 7/1/04. Snaking the drain pipe through the side of this bed.
More drain pipe 7/2/04. Since this bed will have quite a lot of soil in it, and therefore be quite heavy if it retains water, we're putting a drain pipe in the bottom of the bed. It's perforated pipe covered with a knit "sock", made especially for this purpose, that will keep the drain holes from getting plugged up.
In place 7/2/04. Drain pipe in place in the bottom of the bed.
Retaining wall 7/2/04. And the retaining wall completed.
More support 7/2/04. Extra support put in here, behind the compost bins. Probably over-engineered, but better safe than sorry.
Walk shortened 7/2/04. This little walkway was originally squared off and longer. We thought it would work better to cut it off at an angle.
Bumper 7/3/04. We added a little "bumper" at it's end and drilled some large holes for drainage.
Finished off 7/4/04. Drain pipe hole finished off.
Last one 7/4/04. Last piece of "trim" applied and I'm starting to fill the last bed.
Posts 7/4/04. All fence posts used as supports either driven in or cut off at soil level.
One end 7/4/04. Here's one end of the finished new area.
The other end 7/4/04. And here's the other end.
Pipes 7/6/04. Both drain pipes joined together and drain down into the woods. Yep, that's poison ivy.
