11/7/04. After months of waiting, the gazebo and pond are about to happen. Here's what that area looked like the day before work got started.
11/7/04. Another view--a real mess.
11/7/04. Another view.
11/7/04. And yet another.
11/8/04. The plan was to use the existing deck as the base for the gazebo.
11/8/04. But close inspection showed it wouldn't work; for one thing, it wasn't level.
11/8/04. And for another, it was beginning to rot. Plans changed.
11/8/04. First the arbor was cut off at ground level and removed.
11/8/04. And then the deck was cut up into manageable pieces and hauled away.
11/8/04. Then the ground had to be cleaned up of leaves, dead branches, etc.
11/8/04. Clean and ready to go.
11/9/04. Getting started; support posts go in first.
11/9/04. Holes dug for the support posts.
11/9/04. Here, the preliminary frame has been built.
11/9/04. The frame has been braced to keep it in square.
11/9/04. The first post is set in concrete.
11/9/04. And the frame attached to the post. The rest of the frame is up on little "legs".
11/9/04. Another post in.
11/9/04. All of the posts are now in.
11/9/04. As you can see, the frame is attached to the posts with some pretty hefty bolts.
11/9/04. And not just on the corners.
11/9/04. Another layer of boards reinforces the frame, as well as covering up the holes needed to accomodate the large bolts.
11/9/04. Marking for placement of the floor joists.
11/9/04. Hangers in place for the floor joists.
11/9/04. Floor joists in place.
11/9/04. First floor board notched to fit around a post.
11/9/04. First floor board in place.
11/9/04. The whole picture so far.
11/9/04. Another view.
11/10/04. Finished floor.
11/10/04. Top frame done and posts cut off.
11/10/04. Beginning the rafters.
11/10/04. Front and back rafters in place.
11/10/04. Close up of rafters.
11/10/04. This is an odd-shaped gazebo--6' x 11' which makes the end rafters have some strange angles.
11/11/04. Almost done with the rafters.
11/11/04. A closer look.
11/11/04. See all the compound angles? This took a while.
11/15/04. The roof sheathing is on and they're beginning to work on the rails.
11/15/04. Hmmmmm, this will never do.
11/16/04. Since we had no real plans for this gazebo, we did a lot of "engineering on the fly". Here's what we came up with to cover up that ugly sheathing.
11/16/04. Rails almost done.
11/16/04. Closer view of the rails. A decking board will be added on top of the rails.
11/16/04. Black paper being put on the roof, prior to the shingles.
11/16/04. What will they think of next? These "buttons" help keep the nails from pulling out!
11/16/04. Black paper finished, trimmed, and a metal edging applied.
11/19/04. Ceiling and boxing finished up and finished off.
11/19/04. Rails finished off. This will provide a great place to set drinks and place deck rail planters.
11/19/04. Ceiling fan motor installed.
11/19/04. And the rest of the fan attached and in working order.
11/19/04. Roof has been shingled.
11/19/04. And the "gingerbread" trim put up.
11/24/04. While some of the crew was working on the gazebo, others had started the pond, which had to be dug out before the footbridge could be built. Here, they're framing up the footbridge.
11/24/04. Step done, ready to lay planks.
11/24/04. Planks laid and little rails almost done.
11/24/04. Close up.
11/24/04. Rails done.
11/24/04. Close up.
11/26/04. Lattice placed around the bottom of the gazebo.
11/29/04. Decorated for Christmas.
11/29/04. Close up.
12/7/04. Gas fireplace, just assembled.
12/14/04. Gas fireplace finally working, after sending for replacement for defective part. It furnishes a nice warmth on a slightly chilly evening.
2/28/05. Snow.
2/28/05. Another view.
2/28/05. See the lights on the footbridge? There are two on each side and they provide a very nice glow down into the water at night. Looking forward to watching fish swim under the lights at night.
