Calla lilies blossom in spring and early summer, providing superb cut flowers; the smaller types make excellent house plants. Most are fragrant.
Calla lilies can remain in the ground through winter in Zones 8-10. They grow well in light shade, or full sun with partial shade at midday. From Zone 7 north, plant calla lilies outdoors in spring, dig up in fall and store in dry peat moss, perlite, or vermiculite at 40 to 50 degrees.
As house plants, calla lilies need direct sunlight except at midday, when they must have bright indirect or curtain-filtered sunlight. They do best in night temperatures of 50 to 65 degrees and day temperatures of 68 degrees or higher. Plant the rhizomes in early fall, setting them 3 inches deep. Keep barely damp until the first shoot appears, then keep moist and feed monthly with a standard house-plant fertilizer. All except Z. aethiopica need summer dormancy; gradually withhold water until the leaves wither away. Start plants into growth again in the fall by moistening the soil.
Propagate by dividing the rhizomes in late summer or early fall; seedlings usually bloom during the second year.
