Courtland buds 3/11/00 Courtland apple tree is budding out. This tree is about 5 years old. Got one apple off of it last year. Well, two, if you count the one the squirrel got.
3/23/00 Beautiful Courtland apple blossom. Not as many blooms on the Courtland as is on the Granny Smith.
Baby Courtland apples 4/8/00 Baby Courtland apples. Although Courtlands are supposed to ripen earlier than Granny Smiths, these babies are smaller.
Baby Courtland apples thinning 4/21/00 This picture is a little blurry, but you can see where one of these babies is going to fall off. The other still looks healthy, as do quite a few more on this tree.
Courtland apples thinning and growing 4/28/00 Lots of baby Courtland apples have fallen off, but there's still quite a few still hanging on and growing. About marble size here.
Courtland apples growing 5/28/00 'Courtland' apples growing well. About half th size of a large lemon here. Haven't completely decided what to do with this tree yet. I may leave it and prune it severely next spring, or take it out and replace it with a columnar tree.
Courtland apples growing 6/12/00 'Courtland' apples growing well. Getting to be a good size and appear almost perfect. VPI site says this apple will be ready to harvest about September 23. I let the one apple I had last year get too ripe before I picked it, so I'll try to remember this date this year.
Courtland apples growing 7/17/00 No great increase in size, but color is changing to a rosy glow on one side. Still have a dozen or so hanging on, although the birds are having fun pecking holes in some.
Won't be long now 8/27/00 Still have several apples that the critters haven't gotten. They should be ripe in less than a month.
Summary: Picked 11 of these apples on 9/9/00. They are very good. Good eating apples when first picked. Cook well; don't mush up. Will try to prune correctly in late winter.
