Granny Smith buds 3/11/00 Granny Smith apple tree is beginning to put out leaves for 2000. This tree is about 4 years old. It's bloomed every year, but I've gotten no apples--they all fall off. Could be 'cause I haven't sprayed them.
Granny Smith in Full bloom 3/29/00 This tree is FULL of blooms--the absolute most ever. Maybe I'll get a couple of apples this year. Still haven't sprayed. I'll do better next year.
Petal fall 4/2/00 Just after petal fall. If frost doesn't get this tree, I should have some apples this year.
Tent caterpillars on Granny Smith 4/8/00 Well, if it's not one thing it's another. This is a tent caterpillar infestation on my Granny Smith apple. They can be destroyed by burning, spraying or smashing. I choose spraying.
Worm damage 4/8/00 Those little critters can do a lot of damage, as seen on this branch. I hope I got them in time. The tree needs a certain amount of foliage to grow and support the fruit.
Baby Granny Smith apples 4/8/00 Aren't these just the cutest baby apples? Let's hope some of them grow up to be big apples.
Baby Granny Smith gonna fall off 4/19/00 The yellowing stem on these tiny apples, and their lack of growth, tells me they are about to fall off.
Baby Granny Smiths growing 4/28/00 Lots of baby Granny Smith apples have fallen off, but there's still quite a few still hanging on and growing. About marble size here.
Now aphids! What next? 5/4/00 Aphids are attacking this tree now. They're making the leaves curl up. I think this tree is a goner, one way or another.
Apples growing 5/31/00 Despite everything this tree has gone through, the few remaining apples are growing. About half the size of a large lemon now. Still planning on taking this tree out.
Apples growing 6/12/00 Several apples like this remain. VPI site says this is not an apple that will grow well here. I think I found that out.
Apples growing 7/17/00 Two of these apples hanging in there. Both are quite attractive still, but haven't grown a great deal in the last month.
Apples growing 8/27/00 Still hanging in there. Should be ripe in about a month.
New branches 9/27/00 These branches are new this year. Seems I could remove the larger branches opposite the fence and allow the smaller new branches grow and attempt the straighten the tree.
Blooms?!?! 9/30/00 This tree is blooming! OK, OK, I said I'd give it another chance. Gotta give it credit, it's fighting hard to live.
Blooms?!?! 10/6/00 Not just ONE bloom, but about 20!!
Summary: Picked one 'Granny Smith' apple on 9/9/00. It was good. Very good. OK, I'll keep this tree one more year. It will get heavily pruned in late winter, and we will attempt to straighten it up.
