Freshly picked fully ripe blackberries have a delectable flavor seldom experienced except by those who grow their own. Blackberries do not ship well, so commercially grown blackberries are almost always canned or frozen or made into wine or jelly. Individual blackberries are 1 to 2 inches long and are composed of many united segments, each with a seed. Blackberry canes grow one year, then bear fruit and die the second year. Each summer new canes are produced.
Blackberries grow best in a moist but well-drained soil of pH 5.5 to 7.5 that has been supplemented with compost or manure. Bush-type and vine-type blackberries require variety-specific pruning. After the season has passed, remove all canes that have borne fruit.

End of winter 3/11/00 I don't know the variety of these blackberries. I only know they have vicious thorns and are the sweetest blackberries I've ever tasted. I was told they are a cross between blackberry and boysenberry. I got a slip from my in-laws years ago, and we started this patch about 3 years ago with one branch with a few roots attached. I tried thornless blackberries years ago and didn't like the extremely tart flavor.
New growth 4/2/00 Lots of new growth in less than a month.
First bud 4/8/00 First buds are showing up now.
First buds 4/20/00 These buds will be opening up soon.
First bloom 4/28/00 Despite the cold and wet weather, blooming has begun.
Nice vines 5/4/00 Blackberries have grown into a nice mound of vines.
More blooms 5/7/00 Lots more blossoms now, and more to come.
Petal fall 5/7/00 This blossom is just past petal fall.
First baby blackberry for 2000 5/7/00 First baby blackberry for 2000!
Growing well 5/21/00 Not a baby any more. More like a teenager.
Uh-oh! 5/30/00 OK, what's up with this? Some blossoms are turning black and drying up. Don't remember this ever happening before. Can't be lack of water; I watered during the dry spell. Don't think it's too much water; being right on the edge of the yard, drainage is good.
Red 6/12/00 First blackberry to start ripening.
New growth 6/15/00 New growth evident. Since berries are borne on old growth, after harvest, I'll remove all of the canes that bore fruit this year, leaving only this year's new growth.
Yum yum! 7/3/00 Ripe blackberries. Getting a handful or two everyday. Not too bad, I guess, for vines this young.
Grown lots 9/25/00 Obviously I didn't get the old canes cut out. The new growth just exploded before I realized it. Will try to do better next year.
Summary: For the third year, I guess these berries did pretty well. Got about a quart total from this small vine. Hope to get more next year. Will prune back the apple tree in late winter; hopefully that will allow more sun to get to the brambles.
