Grape Logo
Vitis
The grape is one of the oldest fruits know to man, and one variety or another can be grown in almost every part of the United States. Grapes grow on vigorous vines that cling to any available support. The 4- to 8-inch leaves are roughly heart-shaped and the 1/2 - to 1-inch fruit, borne in clusters, ripen from midsummer until late fall according to the variety.
Grapes grow in a wide variety of soils, but do best in sandy, highly organic soil of pH 5.5 to 7.5 that has been supplemented with compost or manure. Grapes planted in heavy clay soil produce many leaves, but few, inferior grapes. Pruning methods are variety-specific.

Grape bud just starting 4/11/00 Grape leaves start as little nubs like this.
Farther along 4/11/00 Here's a grape bud a little farther along.
The grape vine 4/14/00 This Concord grape vine is about 5 or 6 years old. I try to kill it late every fall by cutting it down to the ground. it keeps coming back. Last fall I left some canes on the fence. It will be huge by the end of summer if I don't prune it later, and there will be no grapes because the vines get so thick.
The grape vine 4/18/00 Leaves grew quickly with just a day or so of sun.
Baby grapes 4/19/00 Those little clusters will be blooms soon, and then turn into grapes, I hope.
Baby grapes blossom buds 5/2/00 Those little clusters have grown and will be opening soon.
Vine growing 5/2/00 The entire vine has grown well. Usually I have to prune the vine during the summer, because it grows too big and too thick, and doesn't allow enough air circulation to the growing grapes.
Blooming 5/15/00 Grape blossoms are opening now.
Baby grapes 5/21/00 Grape blossoms have become baby grapes.
Growing fast 5/21/00 Grape vine is growing fast. I will probably have to prune some canes to improve air flow and light to the ripening grapes.
Growing fast 5/26/00 Grapes growing fast.
Fungus among us 6/4/00 Grapes are turning into raisins--prematurely. Probably the fungus that usually gets them. I could prune (too late, probably) but I want to harvest the vines this fall for a project I have in mind. So I'll sacrifice the grapes for the vines this year.
Growing fast 6/15/00 A few bunches are getting more light and air and seem to be doing better than the others. Maybe I'll get a few after all.
Going, too 6/24/00 I guess these are going to go the way of the others.
Growing 8/6/00 Keeps growing, and growing, and growing...
Help! 8/17/00 Help!! I think I have kudzu instead of a grape vine!
Drying 10/7/00 Leaves are beginning to dry up and turn brown.
