![]() Liriope |
| Liriope, also know as "creeping lily-turf," forms mounds of grassy foliage that grow 6 to 12 inches tall, spreading moderately rapidly by underground stems. The leaves, long and narrow (about 1/4 inch across), are evergreen; in extreme cold weather in Zones 4-7 they turn pale yellowish green but remain to cover the ground. In summer, flower stalks bear elongated clusters of 1/4-inch lavender-white blossoms followed by 1/4-inch blue-black berries. This species provides a turflike cover with the added attraction of flowers and ornamental berries; it cannot be walked on without damage but is well suited to beds and borders. It will grow in almost any soil in Zones 4-10 in light conditions that vary from full sun to deep shade, and will tolerate drought. Plant in spring or fall, setting plants about 12 inches apart. Mow or clip off old leaves as the new ones are emerging in spring to assure attractive foliage. new plants can be started by dividing old ones in spring or fall. |
