| October 8, 2001 Temperature 36 this morning, with a heavy frost--about a week earlier than the average first frost. Highs only in the mid 40s today. Brought tender plants in. |

| October 10, 2001 Warmer today. Threw some grass seed down. Need rain. Watered kale and collards. Put tender plants back out. |

| October 11, 2001 Still planting and emptying faded containers. Alpine strawberries are doing well--picked about 10 berries, the largest amount so far. Will need to get bulbs in the ground soon. Decided not to plant pansys until spring. The deer will eat them this winter anyway, so why bother? |

| October 16, 2001 Removed annuals from pond bed. Still planting, sinking, and emptying containers. Fed lagging collards. Covered pond with bird netting to keep leaves out. It's been really pleasant for the last few days, but it turned chilly this afternoon, with gusty wind. |

| October 22, 2001 Broke down and bought some pansys. Two six packs of Fama 'Antique Shades' that I really loved last year, and three six packs of Ultima 'Silhouette Mix', all pastel shades. I planted them in the colonnade apple tree bed like last year. Planted three pink iris 'Rose Apogee' (late spring flowering). |

| October 23, 2001 Planted some old daffodils, as well as some Crocus Chrysanthus 'Pearl Blue' in the mailbox bed. Also planted species tulips, cammasia, snowdrops, allium, and starflowers salvaged last spring in the pond bed. |

| October 24, 2001 Planted the rest of the old daffodils here and there in the front porch bed. Also in that bed, I planted: Daffodil cyclamineus 'February Gold', Daffodil Tazetta 'Geranium', and Tulip 'Angelique' and 'Mount Tacoma'. In the pond bed I planted Anemone blanda mixed, and Anemone coronaria 'De Caen'. |

| October 24, 2001 Planted some dwarf iris reticulata and Danfordiae in the pond bed and front porch bed. Also planted some scilla 'Campanulata Blue' in the mailbox bed, front porch bed, and pond bed. Started shredding leaves last night. |

| October 31, 2001 Daylily 'Happy Returns' still blooming, despite multiple frosts. Moonflower and morning glorys are still blooming, too!! |
