September 1, 2001     Had compost delivered to fill renovated apple bed--future home of 'Arapaho' blackberries. Rained, so only part of the filling got done. Mums, asters, and 'Autumn Joy' sedum blooming beautifully.

September 3, 2001     Finished filling bed and topped off several other raised beds. Removed 'Blue Lake' pole beans and melons. Picked and dried cayennes, and chopped and put 'Anahiem' and sweet peppers in the freezer.

September 4, 2001     Pulled peppers up. Very pleased with all of them. Kale growing well; some almost big enough to eat. Collards all doing well. Will pick 'Roma' tomatoes tomorrow, and start collecting them in the freezer until I have enough to process.

September 5, 2001     Planted 'Arapaho' blackberries in their new home.

September 7, 2001     Planted some mums, the 'Moonbeam' coreopsis, and 'Cream Drop' and 'Perfect Peach Glory' daylilies.

September 8, 2001     Started fall clean-up. Emptied deck rail planters, front walk pots, and the non-blooming purple hyacinth bean. Won't plant this again. Finally took out bulbs saved in pond baskets and salvaged from pre-renovated quarter-round bed. Bought bulbs: 12 anemone 'Blanda Mixed', 12 anemone 'Coronaria de Caen', 12 daffodil cyclamineus 'February Gold', 30 crocus chrysanthus 'Blue Pearl', 4 daffodil tazetta 'Geranium', 8 tulip 'Angelique', 7 tulip 'Mount Tacoma', and 3 bearded iris 'Rose Apogee'.

September 10, 2001     Fed kale. May try to pick some this weekend--really growing well. Planted a few TBI, left over from front bed renovation, in the little bed adjacent to the pentagon bed. Beets didn't do much, so they're over until spring, when I'll try them yet again.

September 11, 2001     Terrorists hijack four passenger planes and fly them into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Arlington, and into the ground in Pennsylvania. I don't feel like gardening today.

September 13, 2001     Planted red camellia sasanqua in pond bed, and white one in front porch bed.

September 14, 2001     Much cooler today, with highs in the mid 60s. Leaves beginning to change in the last couple of days. Fall is on the way.

September 19, 2001     Sank miniature roses in holding bed. Also put the 3" pots of verigated periwinkle there. 'Roma' tomatoes still bearing.

September 21, 2001     Picked first kale. Cabbage worms on collards dusted with Sevin. Pulled up one hill of 'Beauregard' sweetpotatoe tops. Got one nice sized one and one smallish one. Cooked and pretty sweet considering they hadn't been seasoned yet. Kale was delicious too.

September 24, 2001     Finally got my kitty to put on the edge of the pond, looking at the fishes. Ordered it in late June.

September 30, 2001     Applied first fall lawn feeding. Dug 'Beauregard' sweetpotatoes. Got about a peck. Some very large, some small. Been emptying containers, a few at a time. Froze kale.
