April 4, 2002     Laid red plastic mulch on tomato beds, with soaker hose underneath.

April 5, 2002     Very cold the last few nights. Supposed to get down to 26 tonight. Bringing ferns and peach tree in every night to sun porch. Started squash, cucumeber, 'Teatime Rose' Four O'Clock seeds.

April 7, 2002     Bought two more clematis viticella: another 'Polish Spirit' and a 'Warsaw Nike'. Started hardening off tomatoes. Started 'Flying Saucers' morning glory seeds.

April 10, 2002     Ordered hydrangea 'Forever Pink' and a Lenten rose from Wayside Gardens.

April 11, 2002     Bought 2 heliotropium arborescens 'Atlantis', 1 lamium maculatum 'Golden Anniversary', 6 'Princess Balcon' ivy geranium, 1 Oenothera berlandieri 'Siskiyou', 12 'White Avalanche' petunia, and 12 coleus 'Wizard Mix'.

April 15, 2002     In the 80s today. Everything is popping up! Planted 'Blueberry' impatiens in back deck beds and potted up some hanging baskets. Viola 'Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow' is precious--it does change color every day!

April 16, 2002     Record highs today--90 here. Tulip wilsoniana got fried. English daisy droops terribly in the heat. May be too faint of heart for here. Potted 'Avalanche White' petunias in deck rail planters for front porch railing. Lawn is gorgeous, but needing mowing twice a week right now. Should cool off a little later in the week.

April 19, 2002     Still hot, but relief coming this weekend. Saw first hummingbird of the season today. Also saw a frog sitting on a pond rock--I didn't see him until he jumped into the pond when I got too close.

April 21, 2002     Away for the weekend. Went to Anderson's in Newport News. Bought a regal geranium 'Imperial', impatiens 'Elfin Lipstick', coleus 'Wizard Rose', lemon verbena, and coreopsis 'Nana'. At Crittenden Farms I got 4 hardy carnation (dianthus caryophyllus) 'King of the Blacks' and verbena canadensis 'Appleblossom'.

April 23, 2002     Two pond iris have buds!! As does one Siberian iris and I. pallida and I. pallida varigata. Lamium 'Golden Anniversay' doesn't look too good, however. Frost warning for tonight.

April 25, 2002     Getting things planted as fast as possible. Louisiana iris arrived and I'm trying them in different sites/conditions to see how they do.

April 28, 2002     Planted 'Dasher II' cucumbers and 'Park's Creamy Improved' straightneck squash.

April 30, 2002     Yellow flag and blue flag blooming. Lamium looking better. Lots of iris blooming. Lettuces about ready for picking, and 'Earlyglow' strawberries will be starting to turn any day. Will bird-proof them this weekend.
