August 1, 2002     Collards germinated well--28 out of 30--and are growing. Half of the viola 'Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow' sprouted already. Ordered more seeds of these violas today. Morning glory 'Minibar Rose' has buds--should open tomorrow. I LOVE the varigated leaves on this morning glory! Looks like 'Mdm. Julia Correvon' has more blossom buds shaping up. Crape myrtle 'Supersonic' is much larger this year and has blossom buds.

August 2, 2002     Morning glory 'Minibar Rose' had two blooms this morning. Got lots of stuff ordered today. From Park's Seeds: 'Economy Daffodil Mix', Crocus speciosus, Crocus zonatus, Colchicum 'The Giant', Narcissus 'Chromacolor', Species tulip sampler, leucojum vernum, Iris angelica (English iris), Iris 'Bountiful Harvest', Allium 'Globemaster', and Tulip 'Red Impression'. From Brent and Becky's Bulbs: Narcissus 'Rijnveld's Early Sensation', Narcissus 'Baby Moon', Narcissus 'Falconet', and Narcissus nanus var. lobularis. From Van Dycks: Daylily 'Siloam Plum Tree', Winter aconite, Daylily 'Little Missy', Narcissus 'Bell Song', and Daylily 'Bama Music'. From Spring Hill Nursery: Dwarf reblooming Iris collection. From Jung: Muscari 'Delft Blue Mix', 'Early Sunrise' coreopsis seed, Tradescantia 'Red Grape', Daylily 'Siloam Ethel Smith', Daylily 'Peach Fairy', and Monarda 'Petite Delight'.

August 3, 2002     Cut old blackberries off by the ground--lots of winter kill this year. Threw some granulated Miracle Gro on them. Picking on average of 5-6 cucumbers daily. Bought some ivy to go in window boxes for winter interest and planted them in the planters. Looks like another gift iris is gonna make it: 'Gilded Cream'. Russian sage 'Little Spire' in the pond bed is growing like gangbusters. Frog has apparently made the pond his home--we see him almost daily. Today he was posing under the edge of a stone that held a resin frog--in exactly the same position. Life imitating art, LOL. 'Bilbary Ice' spiderwort has come back better than ever after beening pruned back to the ground. Black-eyed Susan vine is climbing well. The soil dries out really quickly since the pot is on the driveway, though, I think.

August 6, 2002     The bloom on morning glory 'Flying Saucers' is almost as big as a saucer...and very pretty.

August 11, 2002     First bloom on 'Minibar Rose' morning glory. Mums starting to bloom. 'Teatime Rose' four o'clock is doing well.

August 19, 2002     More blooms on 'Minibar Rose' morning glory. Found the cutest little wild morning glory by the mailbox fence post. The bloom is tiny--about 1 inch across. Must have come from seed from a hybrid? Anyway, it's cute! Russian sage 'Little Spire' in the pond bed is gorgeous! Mums are blooming more--pruning must have been done right--they're mounding really pretty and covered with buds/blooms.

August 20, 2002     One blossom on the Meyer lemon germintated and is growing well. Ordered Lilium x formolongi 'Lancer' and 'American Purple Top' rutabaga seeds from Park's Seeds and onion sets for fall planting from Selma Seed.

August 21, 2002     Pulled up string bean and cuke vines. Just not able to get enough water one them to keep them going. Pulled up 'Teatime Rose' morning glory. Got very top-heavy and fell over, breaking most stems.

August 23, 2002     Pulled up tomato vines.

August 24, 2002     'Minibar Rose' morning glory is in it's glory. Blooming up a storm, but it's a little top heavy. Next year I'm planning on putting it in a window box, pretty much where it is now, and letting it climb up the trellis. 'Flying Saucers' morning glory doing well, too, even though it gets a fair amount of shade. Also getting top heavy and had to be moored to the deck railing. One clump of Acidanthera in the pond bed is blooming. Fall can't be far away. Monarda 'Marshall's Delite' is coming back strong. Clump has filled in very nicely after major cut-back. Don't think it'll bloom again, but that's OK. Have a dwarf variety on order to arrive this fall for planting there. Old blackberries putting out some new growth. 'Pink Damask' daylily babies doing OK. Took some ivy cuttings to start in window boxes for deck rails next year. Water hyacinths blooming. Spread/dug in manure in all raised beds, getting ready for fall veggie planting.

August 26, 2002     Crape myrtle 'Supersonic' is blooming up a storm. Pulled up butter beans. There was a praying mantis that lived in these beans most of the summer, resulting in very few insects on the beans. Moved Mr. Mantis to one of the young cucumber plant still coming along, which is blooming and has a tiny cucumber on it. Verbena 'Sissinghurst' is doing great. Two cuttings I rooted are growing fast, too. I like this plant. A lot. Planted rutabaga and kale seeds.

August 27, 2002     Pulled up pepper plants; no use wasting water on them any longer. Portulaca 'Double Yubi' has performed beyond my wildest dreams. I sure hope I can find this plant next year--I can think of several places where it would be perfect! Anacharis in the pond has little white blooms!! Cool!

August 29, 2002     Rutabaga and kale are beginning to sprout already.

August 30, 2002     Mist/drizzle for the last several days, and cool. Good for the grass, the newly seeded veggies and newly planted collards, but not enough for much of anything else. We'll take what we can get though. Governor has put some water restrictions in place--no watering lawns--just when I need to reseed.
