July 1, 2002 Dry, dry, dry. 'Barbarescu' lilium blooming. Very pretty. 'Fordhook' baby limas blooming. Hardy glads will be blooming in a day or two. I think the blue birds are gone--must have been too much activity around here for them.
July 2, 2002 Japanese beetles out in full force on 'Heritage' rose; Sevin dusted. Lilium 'Carillion' is just about gone. Yummy scent. Strangest thing. Hemerocallis 'Pink Damask' has developed what looks like new plants on a bloom stalk. There are two of these "babies" with what look like roots around the attachment. Will try to root them a little later.
July 3, 2002 Two hardy glads are blooming. One a drop dead gorgeous red with white picotee and the other a salmon pink with a cerise eye. Russian sage 'Little Spire' is growing well in the pond bed. The other one is coming along, but slower. Carolina jasmine is having a growth spurt--it'll be twining around the mailbox post soon. Both Clematis 'Polish Spirit' are still blooming.
July 4, 2002 My little gardenia is blooming!! Two smaller than normal blooms, but it's such a tiny plant. Scent is divine. Picked first purple 'Rainbow Mix' sweet pepper. I really think 'Blue Boy' garden phlox is going to bloom. Looking more and more promising. 'Yellow Stargazer' lily is in full bloom. Pretty pale golden in color. Butterfly weed is fixing to bloom again. The little agapanthus I started from seed is getting ready to bloom. 'Meyer' lemon fruit is about 1/2 inch in diameter. 'Teatime Rose' four o'clock is doing really nicely--really pretty cerise colored bloom.
July 7, 2002 Potted up 4 iris I received from an iris list mmember. Varieties: 'Bridge in Time', 'Rebound', 'Gilded Cream', and 'Returning Chameleon'. Also potted up 2 verbena 'Sissinghurst' cuttings I rooted. Hardy glads are blooming.
July 8, 2002 Picked first 'Dasher II' cuke of the year. Been picking tomatoes for about a week. Got disgusted with the red plastic mulch under my tomatoes--so hard to get enough moisture to them--that plastic just bakes in this hot sun. Mulched with shredded leaves. 'Fordhook' baby limas have a few baby pods forming.
July 9, 2002 Small shower with 3/10 inch. Way too little. Picking lots of 'Rainbow Mix' peppers. Pulled 10 ears of corn for freezer.
July 12, 2002 Pruned 'Bilbary Ice' spiderwort back to new central growth. Also pruned 'Marshall's Delight' monarda way back. Deer pruned strawberries for me--I should have just waited for them to do it and saved myself some work. Meyer lemon is getting ready to bloom again! The agapanthus I started from seed last year is blooming. It's still in a container, but I think I'll plant it in the pond bed someplace.
July 15, 2002 All caladiums are doing great!! 'Minibar Rose' morning glory growing well. 'Warsaw Nike' clematis has a few blooms! 'Flying Saucers' morning glory also growing nicely and is ready to bloom. Rose 'The Prince' in full bloom. Really old rose fragrance. Garden phlox 'Blue Boy' is indeed blooming!! Dwarf canna 'Sunny Delight' is just beginning to bloom. Clematis 'Kermesina' is growing well, and could possibly bloom this year. The double Yubi portulaca is doing so well--filling the pot. 'Muskadet' lilium blooming. 'Stargazer' should be blooming soon--it's the last of the lilium to bloom. 'Josee' lilac is growing, but no repeat bloom as advertized.
July 16, 2002 'Flying Saucers' morning glory bloomed. Dwarf canna 'Sunny Delight' bloom opening fast. The double Yubi portulaca is doing so well--filling the pot. Tiger lily blooming. 'Stargazer' blooming.
July 22, 2002 Getting good number of cukes. Squash died from lack of water while I was away this past weekend--planted another hill of cukes in it's place. Just about all of my caladiums are blooming--multiple blooms. Picked a few string beans and butter beans tonight, along with about 1 cup of blackberries. 'Bilbary Ice' spiderwort coming back strong. 'Stargazer' oriental lily bloomed beautifully. 'Mdm. Julia Correvon' clematis has one bloom--surprize. Nice bright cerise color.
July 23, 2002 'Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow' violas still blooming!! 'Blue Boy' garden phlox is putting on quite a show. Verbena 'Appleblossom' blooming it's little heart out. Mr. Froggy still visiting on a regular basis.
July 25, 2002 'Rebound' gift iris is showing new growth. 'Better Boy' and 'Celebrity' tomatoes are not looking good. 'Delicious' tomatoes are about to bite the dust. Picking a few string beans and butter beans. Sting beans got hurt bad by deer and rabbits. Butter beans are loaded with blooms.
July 27, 2002 Planted a hill of cukes in holding bed to test amount of sun. If sun exposure is sufficient, that'll give me more usable space next year. Bought one Rudbeckia 'Goldsturm' and one Echinecea 'Magnus' to fill in some gaps in the street and front porch beds. Also bought daylily 'Autumn Red' which is supposed to rebloom. Also bought 2 standard African violets and 4 mini African violets for my office at work.
July 28, 2002 Started seeds of 'Georgia' collards, blue sage, and viola 'Yesterday, Today, and Tommorow'.
July 30, 2002 Picking cukes everyday. Meyer lemon blooming again. Tried to get better pollination with an artist's brush. Collards are already beginning to sprout.
July 31, 2002 'Josee' lilac is blooming again--just a few blooms, but it *is* blooming. Almost all collard seeds have sprouted. Dwarf fig is looking really good since being planted in the bed. 'Arapaho' blackberries have responded well to having compost spread around the bases, with a good deal of new growth. Sweet alyssum 'Easter Basket' is still doing fairly well in the agapanthus planter despite the heat. Coreopsis rosea 'Sweet Dreams' blooming well.
