May 1, 2002     Still dry. The highlight of today is the opening of the first I. pallida variegata bloom. It is gorgeous and really does smell like grape Koolaid!! Trying to get plant markers on everything--at least the spring bulbs before the foliage dies down. Started adding soil from the stash to the pond bed and street bed so I could finish planting the perennials. Hope to get a load of compost soon. Planted 'Daybreak' sweet corn. Only a few more things to plant before starting perennials for fall planting. Way ahead of last year.

May 6, 2002     Went ahead and bought some bagged top soil. Topped off and mulched the street and pond beds. Placed soaker hoses in all flower beds and around bean teepees. Limed the lawn.

May 9, 2002     Been very busy. We've been having plenty of rain for the past week--thunderstorms several nights. Got the pond bed and street bed topped off and mulched. Corn, cucumbers, and squash are popping up. All tomatoes except 'Petty Whopper' have blooms. I. pallida bloomed today--also smells like grape. Got replacement for 'The Prince' rose and potted it. TBI 'Radiant Apogee' bloomed. 'Earliglow' strawberries beginning to ripen. Picked first lettuce today--all varieties. Just about all plants are in the ground--except for some montbretia bulbs that I started in pots. Oops! Still need to get lilium planted. Aiming for that tomorrow.

May 10, 2002     Got most of the lilium planted. Waiting on several to sprout before planting. 'Arapaho' blackberries growing well; a few blossoms on old canes. Last year's balsam reseeded and there are a few 3" seedlings in the back deck bed.

May 13, 2002     Another 1 1/2 inches of rain this evening. Things are looking quite nice. Happy to see that several dahlias made it through from last year.

May 18, 2002     Bought 3 daylilies: 'Siloam June Bug', 'Blazing Bonfire', and 'Bric-a-Brac'. Also bought an Echinecea 'Bravado' and 2 6-packs of 'Telstar Mixed' dianthus. I've had such good luck with the 'Telstar Purple' that I bought a couple of years ago that I promised myself if I ever saw them again I'd get more. Also bought 3 pelargonium:

May 23, 2002     Planted Hemerocallis 'Siloam June Bug', 'Blazing Bonfire', and 'Bric-a-Brac' in the pond bed. Echinecea 'Bravado' went in there too. Also planted 'Baby Fordhook' lima beans.

May 26, 2002     I *think* that both Agapanthus 'Pinocchio' and a Japanese iris are going to bloom! Tiny I. cristata had one bloom already and it looks like another one is on the way. It's only about 3 inches tall, total! So cute. Ditched white avalanche petunias. NO scent and attacted aphids like crazy. Planted more Supertunia 'Royal Velvet' which has a delicious scent and so far no aphids on the first ones I planted. Tomato 'Rutgers' and 'Better Boy' have egg-sized tomatoes. Clematis viticella 'Polish Spirit' is outdoing itself. Absolutely gorgeous! 'Allstar' strawberries bearing very well. They don't get as dark red as the 'Earliglow' but are generally larger and just as sweet. Need rain again. Have been watering tomatoes and green beans.

May 29, 2002     'Baby Fordhook' lima beans are beginning to sprout. Rose 'Ambridge Rose' is just about to open it's first blossom. 'Lollipop' lilium are blooming--both in the street bed and in the container. Peppers have buds. All tomatoes have blossoms or buds or baby tomatoes.
