August 3, 2003     Tomatoes are pathetic. Vines are dying. Pulled up 'Sweet Million' plants today, as well as all of the cukes except 'Dasher II'. Planted more 'Dasher II' cucumbers for a late crop. Planted more ivys in deck rail planters, and potted up some rooted ivy cuttings. Daylily 'Pardon Me' is blooming. Nice pinkish red color. I like it. Bought 2 more hosta today and got them potted up: 'Christmas Tree' and 'Frosted Jade'. TB iris need dividing. Gloriosa lily is growing well but no signs of a bloom in sight. Started adding Ironite to the soluble plant food and I can really tell the difference--leaves have greened up quite a bit.

August 4, 2003     Took out part of this year's canes from 'Arapaho' blackberries. Pruned container roses, fed, and topped off the pots with compost. Pulled up most of the cucumber plants and planted more 'Dasher II' cucumbers.

August 7, 2003     'Dasher II' cucumbers are up. Bought a 'Ruby Stella' reblooming daylily.

August 9, 2003     Pulled up the rest of the cucumber plants and found what killed them: squash bugs. There were hundreds of them in the mulch. Sprayed the bed with insecticidal soap and killed them all. I'm sure I killed some beneficials, too, and I hate that, but I had to get rid of the squash bugs.

August 10, 2003     No squash bugs. Mulched the garden bed paths with new cypress mulch. Tomatoes are pathetic. Vines are dead/dying and fruit falls off, rotten. Still getting a few tomatoes to eat and will pull up vines soon. 'Immortality' has one more bloom stalk. Planted collard seeds.

August 13, 2003     Hooray! My Sweet autumn clematis has blossom buds!! It's been growing well, but I didn't expect it to bloom this year. I guess that means it's getting enough sun where it is and it's happy. So am I.

August 16, 2003     Pulled up half of the tomato plants. Hundreds of rotten tomatoes, both on the plants and on the ground. Prepared beds for kale.

August 18, 2003     Planted kale. Iris 'Immortality' is still blooming. Clematis 'Durandii' has grown slowly and has a blossom bud!

August 22, 2003     Kale is sprouting.

August 24, 2003     Bought 2 new hostas: 'Green Fried Tomatoes' and 'Fragrant Bouquet'. Potted up collard seeds.

August 29, 2003     Finally got hostas I ordered in June. Also got the daylilies, with a complimentary plant each of 'Charlie Pierce', 'Frank Gladney' and 'Cherokee Mary', (although I didn't get one I ordered) along with 2 blue caryopteris. Sweet Autumn clematis is blooming. So CUTE!! Last 'Immortality' still blooming. Colchicum 'The Giant' is blooming again.

August 30, 2003     Potted up all of the new hostas. They are quite small, so they went into smallish pots and I'll sink them for the winter and repot them next spring when they start sprouting. Potted up the daylilies and caryoptyris too, and will sink them, as well. The daylilies are nice large plants. Did the annual lawn redo: mow very short, dethatch, mow again, seed. Planted a few things I've been collecting in the new storage room bed at the back deck: an unnamed coral bells, 2 lily of the valley, liatris 'Picador' and yellow loosestrife.

August 31, 2003     Bought 2 new hostas: 'Sum and Substance' and 'Surtido'.
