March 8, 2003Cleaned out pond bed. Dug out monarda 'Marshall's Delight', which had become invasive, and replaced it with 'Petite Delight', a dwarf variety. Kale is putting out new growth. Found limequat and 5 cranberry plants on front porch this morning. Bought 6 African violets for my office at work. 'Stark's Sensation' miniature peach buds showing color, and green tip emerging.

March 11, 2003Four more veggie beds cleaned out.
March 12, 2003Dug up buddleia 'Lockinch'. No easy task; large roots had grown through the hardware cloth bed liner so we had to patch that up. Potted up I. germanica 'Camelot Rose' and 'Liason', and asiatic lilies 'Chianti', 'Avignon', and 'Nove Cento'.
March 13, 2003Hollyhock seeds have sprouted. Several peach blossoms open.
March 16, 2003One coreopsis 'Sunray', one Rose campion (Coronaria), and one sedum 'Stonecrop' seeds sprouted. Bought from Anderson's greenhouse this weekend: Japanese maple 'Bloodgood', Forget-me-not, and veronica 'Georgia Blue'. Also bought more caladiums at Lowe's: 'Arno Nehrling', 'White Wing', 'Postman Joyner', 'Rosalie', 'Sweetheart', 'Candidum Jr.', and 'Gingerland'.
March 17, 2003The hydrangea is alive!!!!!! I see several sprouts close to the ground. More seeds up. Ordered strawberry plants today: 25 each 'Earliglow', 'Allstar', 'Delmarvel' 'Redchief'. I'm going to plant more than in the past. In fact, I have a new gardening philosophy. My space is too small to grow enough of lots of veggies, etc., to make much difference, so I'm going to grow more of fewer things. This year, strawberries, tomatoes, cucumbers will be the larger crops, with a few sweet peppers and squash thrown in. I did combine several packages of lettuce seeds left over from last year and broadcast them in the little side yard bed: 'Tom Thumb', 'Red Sails', 'Green Ice', and 'Black Seeded Simpson'. Tomato seedlings are doing great.
March 18, 2003Spread manure on the 4 strawberry beds-to-be and worked it in with my Homelite mini tiller. Planted 'Old Spice' sweetpeas in a deck rail planter sitting on the deck at the garage end. Planted 'Detroit Dark Red' beets. Bought cucumber seeds: 'Poinsett'.
March 19, 2003Cooler and damp today. We've had a very wet fall and winter. Rain predicted for the next 3 days, so Spring may be wet too. The drought is over. Bought lettuce seeds: 'Grand Rapids' and 'Salad Bowl'.War with Iraq may start tonight.
March 22, 2003Got rest of the beds cleaned out and manured. Planted 1 package each of 'Grand Rapids' and 'Salad Bowl' leaf lettuces. Planted dwarf buddleia in pond bed. Removed net from pond and deadheaded and fed pond plants. Bought some lily of the valley pips. Again--I can't seem to get these things to grow. Also got some fence posts and fence wire to help keep the blackberries upright. Narcissus that I planted in the ivy to naturalize are finally up and a few have buds. It's shady and cooler on that side of the house, so that's why.
March 23, 2003Yea!!! I saw a couple of honey bees on my peach tree!!! I think it's self-pollinating, but I'll take all the help I can get. Planted the lily of the valley, daylily 'Blueberry Sundae', the forget-me-not, veronica 'Georgia Blue', 3 I. chrysographes, and I. siberica 'Dance Ballerina Dance'. One 'Arapaho' blackberry is already putting out new shoots from the ground. Aster 'Hella Lacy' is sprouting in the pot in the holding bed.
March 24, 2003Mowed lawn for the first time this season. Grass is nicely thick and lush. Put down lawn food and crabgrass preventer, too. I think the first lettuce is just beginning to sprout. Snow crocus are just about gone and I kept forgetting to take a picture of them. Cute little purple and white guys.
March 25, 2003Planted Simplon lily (3) and Nerine Bowdenii (Pink Spider Lily) (5) bulbs. Planted dwarf hollyhock that my neighbor gave me last year (from the holding bed) in the left side bed, right beside the satellite dish pole. Started tomato seeds: 'Better Boy', 'Red Brandywine', 'Rutgers', and 'Delicious'. Pulled calla lilies out of the holding bed. Wet soil in the pelargoniums that wintered behind the heat pump. They're dry as chips--not much hope, I'm afraid. First lettuce *is* sprouting.
March 26, 2003Started 'Early Crisp' sweet pepper seeds.
March 27, 2003'Headbourne Hybrid' agapanthus is coming up. 'Pinocchio' in the container is a no show so far. Doesn't look good for it. Naturalized narcissus are starting to bloom. 'Arapaho' blackberries are putting out new shoots already. The largest plant has quite a few shoots, several some distance from the main plant.
March 28, 2003Strawberry plants arrived from Allen Plants. I know what I'll be doing tomorrow.
March 29, 2003Received weigela 'Midnight Wine' and daylily 'Rainbow Candy' and planted them. Also got some things from the holding bed planted. Staked and fenced 'Arapaho' blackberries. Bought two potted ivies (Hedera helix) to use to start topiaries to go on either side of the garage door.
March 30, 2003It's snowing today. About 1/2 inch during the morning hours. It's a very wet snow and it's ruining my gorgeous narcissus. Temps predicted to get down into the upper 20s tonight. Brought limequat in last night and moved 'Stark's Sensation' miniature peach up under the porch. Think I'll bring it into the garage tonight.
March 31, 2003Got more plants today. Still too cool to work outside--hopefully tomorrow will be better. Lots to plant.
