When we first moved into this house, the yard was in terrible shape. Full of weeds, with little lawn grass visible. For many years, we provided only minimal maintenance, but for the last 10 years or so, I've spent more time on the lawn. We've whittled it down with flower beds, driveways, decks and raised vegetable beds until it takes me only about 30 minutes to trim and mow it. Just the right size!
The soil in our yard was clay fill dirt that would never grow much of a lawn despite what I did. So, several years ago, we contracted with a landscaper to remove the top few inches of clay, fill in with topsoil, and seed the lawn for a fresh start. I've been able to maintain it since then. There was one particularly troublesome area that would never grow grass because there was a huge rock just under the surface. The landscaper removed that and filled in the hole it left. The rock was so big, that it had to be hauled away on a front-end loader!
Being in USDA Zone 7, I grow Tall Fescue (usually Kentucky 31) grass in my lawn. It's a COOL season grass, and overwinters here well. It tolerates the hot humid summers well, too, and stays green if watered.

Before first mowing of 2000 2/26/00. Here's what the lawn looked like before the first mowing of the 2000 season. This mowing was needed earlier than usual, due to the very mild weather for the last week or so. Not too bad, but some tip burn from the ice and snow during January and early February.
After first mowing of 2000 2/26/00. Here's what the lawn looked like after the first mowing of the 2000 season. With the tip burn gone, it looks pretty good for a February lawn! Winterizing the lawn last fall really paid off.
WOW!!!!! 3/14/00. After the third mowing. Greening up really nicely, 10 days and two small rain showers after applying fertilizer.
Overdose of fertilizer 3/14/00. I think this is due to a too heavy application of lawn food. I must have stopped here, and not released the lever on the spreader handle.
Green and luxurious 4/24/00. Really green and luxurious this year.
Getting ready for weed kill 5/7/00. Still looking good. Watered in preparation for broadleaf week control application.
Beginning to fade a little 5/7/00. Here you can tell the green is not quite a bright as it had been, and there are a few brown blades--could be from lack of rain for over a week. Getting ready to weed and feed.
Clover before 5/8/00. Here we have a patch of clover mixed in with the lawn grass.
Clover after 5/8/00. Here we see the effects of the broadleaf weed control on the patch of clover.
Deceiving 6/7/00. From this view, the lawn still looks pretty good.
Really brown 6/7/00. Here you can see there's a lot of dead grass mixed in.
Dry 6/19/00. Now the dead grass isn't hidden. Don't know whether it's the dry weather, or the weed killer.
Renovation 9/20/00. Lawn mowed closely, dethatched, and mowed again. Brown areas are the results of an application of RoundUp on weed patches.
Closeup 9/20/00. Closeup of dethatched area.
Seeded 9/21/00. Overseeded lawn.
Dead 9/24/00. Better view of RoundUp effects.
Sprouting 9/27/00. Finally--seeds sprouting.
Looking better 10/4/00. Looking better.
Looking better 10/15/00. Seeded areas filling in.
Looking better 10/27/00. Purtty. Lots of new grass up. Warm weather this fall has been very helpful.
Looking better 11/7/00. Even the leaves can't make this lawn look bad now. Very pleased with the way this looks.
