Made it through the winter!! 3/4/00. Border pinks survived the winter in pretty good shape.
New growth! 3/23/00. Good showing of new growth for 2000.
Lots of buds 4/15/00. Quite a few buds showing up.
Close-up of buds!! 4/15/00. Close-up of buds.
Mayday, mayday! 4/15/00. Uh-oh! Problems!! Looks like something is eating the border pinks.
Chewed-off stems 4/15/00. Yep! Something chewed the stems right off.
The plot thickens!! 4/15/00. The culprit escaped through this tunnel, I suspect.
Destroyed! 4/17/00. My poor border pinks have been decimated. I doubt they'll recover, even with the MoleMover® intervention.
First fully open bloom 4/17/00. Despite everything, my border pinks have valiently displayed their first fully open bloom. I am so disappointed. I love their fragrance, and had so looked forward to lots of blooms.
Holding pattern 4/24/00. Planted this new plant in the "quarter-round" bed in a holding pattern; will redo this bed this fall.
Blooming though hurt 4/30/00. Getting some blooms despite the damage.
More than I thought 5/4/00. Getting more blooms than I thought I would. And the fragrance--heavenly.
Closeup 5/4/00. What a sweet little bloom this plant has.
Seedlings 5/13/00. Seeds planted 6 days ago are almost all sprouted.
Dead 5/24/00. Original border pinks are almost all dead.
Deadheaded 5/25/00. New border pinks finished blooming and have been deadheaded.
Lone seedling 5/25/00. Last surviving seedling; all others suffered from damping off.
Growing well 6/8/00. "New" pinks are growing well.
Lone seedling 6/15/00. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Lone seedling 7/1/00. So far, so good.
Lone seedling 7/8/00. I'm SO proud of this!
Spreading 7/13/00. "New" pink spreading well.
Lone seedling 7/23/00. WOW! Still growing really well. Hope it is well established before cold weather. Should be--we've got 3 months before the cold really gets here.
Planted 8/21/00. Planted in the street bed, in view of the front porch.
Spreading 9/15/00. Growing and spreading.
New growth 2/8/01. Despite the fact that the deer chewed "my" pink off to the soil, it's coming out and actually filling in. Maybe they did me a favor, after all.
Doing well 3/27/01. "New" pink is doing well...
Buds 4/2/01. ...and is full of buds.
Not again! 4/10/01. Literally days before I planned to dig this up for the pond installation, I've been hit again. How disheartening.
Boohoo 4/10/01. This was all I could save.
New growth 4/10/01. On a happier note, "my" pink is doing well.
My buds 5/4/01. "My" pink with buds.
Oooo 5/5/01. Totally worth the wait.
Planted 5/15/01. Salvaged "new" pink planted in pond bed.
Lovely 5/23/01. "My" pink in pretty much full bloom. Lovely.
Survivor 3/31/02. Each piece of the salvaged "new" pink has grown into a fine clump, ready to bloom. No more problems with voles, due to the lined bed.

Back to Dianthus.
