Four O'Clock Logo
Mirabilis jalapa
A fragrant, old-fashioned flower so named because the flowers do not open till around 4 o'clock in the afternoon, except on cloudy days. Also known as Marvel of Peru, it is an easy to grow addition to informal gardens. Ideal in borders as a low summer hedge.
Four O'Clocks are heat resistant and tolerant of poor soil. Plants can often reseed themselves or grow back from their tuberous roots. For ideal conditions, select a sunny location in somewhat fertile well drained soil and water when dry in the summer. Blooms mid summer to fall, sometimes in different shades of color on the same plant. Plant seed directly outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Cover seeds with 1/2 inch fine soil. Seed can be started earlier indoors in individual peat pots 4-6 weeks before last expected frost. Allow 12 inches between thinned or individually potted seedlings for transplant.
