![]() Hosta plantaginea |
| Although plantain lilies, or hostas, produce attractive 1- to 1 1/2-inch lilylike flowers atop slender leafless stalks, they are valued more for the mounds of highly decorative foliage that they present from spring until frost. There are quite a few varieties, with foliage colors varying from yellow green to blue green, as well as those with yellow/green and white/green varigated leaves. Flowers are white or pale lavender. Plantain lilies grow throughout Zones 3-9 and thrive in moist soil liberally enriched with compost or leaf mold. They do best in light shade, but will tolerate full sun or deep shade. Space plants 12 to 24 inches apart, depending on the variety. New plants can be obtained by dividing clumps in spring. Clumps can otherwise be left undisturbed indefinitely. |
