Lamb's Ears Logo
Stachys byzantina
Lamb's-ears is grown for its woolly, gray foliage rather than its flowers. The flowers are produced from mid- to late summer, however, they are not ornamental and some of the cultivars do not flower.
The plant grows best in a sunny site that has well-drained soil. The clumps grow slowly and eventually become bare in the middle and so need to be rejuvenated by division.

Lamb's Ears coming up!! 4/2/00. Lamb's Ears at beginning of spring.
Growing well 4/15/00. Lamb's Ears growing well.
Blossom buds 4/30/00. Sending up blossom buds. I don't remember this plant blooming last year (first year), so I'm anxious to see what it looks like.
Taller and taller 5/10/00. Getting taller. Wonder how tall these stalks get?
Fuzzy 5/12/00. I just love to feel these fuzzy leaves.
Blooming 5/15/00. First bloom. Not very spectacular, but I like it.
Bloom 5/15/00. The little flower sort of looks like a miniature orchid.
Taller 5/16/00. Getting still taller.
Lots of blossoms 5/21/00. Lots of blossoms now.
Getting floppy 5/21/00. Getting a little leggy and floppy. Will cut back when if finishes blooming.
Bloom 5/28/00. Yep, I think I like the bloom. Some people don't, and cut the bloom stalks off, using just the base of the plant as a ground cover.
Falling 5/28/00. Rain is making the stalks top heavy and they're falling over.
Blooms fading 6/13/00. Blooms are just about gone. I left the blossom stalks this long because the honeybees and bumble bees just loved them.
Deadheaded 6/29/00. Deadheaded.
Rebloom 7/18/00. A solitary reblooming stem.
