The flat plates of tiny flowers are a familiar summer sight in herbaceous borders everywhere and in many rockeries. These flower heads are excellent for cutting and can be dried for winter decoration. Yellow is the usual color but you can also find white, cream, pink, and red. These blooms are not the only attractive feature--the green or silvery foliage is nearly always fern-like and provides a welcome contrast to the large leaves of so many herbaceous border plants. .
All are easy to grow with no special soil requirements and they have above-average drought tolerance, but the taller varieties may need staking on exposed sites. Cut down to ground level in autumn. Propagate by dividing clumps before they become overcrowded.
