Azaleas are among the most colorful of all flowering shrubs, bearing 3-6 inch clusters of red, yellow, orange, pink, white, or purple flowers in spring and early summer. Azaleas will serve most garden uses admirably, and they can also be grown in open woodlands in light shade where, with proper initial soil preparation, they are often able to take care of themselves indefinitely. Azaleas need moist acid soil that has been well supplemented with peat moss or leaf mold. Azaleas will grow in full sun or light shade, but light shade is preferable in hot areas.

Azalea Icon'Hilda Niblett', a low-growing, vigorous plant, never more than a foot tall and 1-3 feet wide, staying neat without pruning. Easy and very hardy, it withstands temperaures to -30F without plant injury and to -10F without bud damage. It's mounded habit and evergreen foliage are lovely year-round; in late spring and early summer the effect is enhanced by huge 4-inch flowers of pink marked with rose. Zones 5-9.
