3/14/00. This azalea, and one just like it on the other side of the small deck, were planted 25 years ago. They're usually covered in large white blossoms, and get mildly pruned every 2-3 years, just to keep their shape.
3/14/00. The 25 year old azalea is budding now.
3/29/00. One of the first fully open blooms on the 25 year old plants. Still beautiful, huh?
4/6/00. Both 25 year old azaleas with younger pink and white azaleas in between.
4/8/00. Just two days later and look at the difference.
4/8/00. Another view of these azaleas.
4/8/00. Here's a close-up of the pink azaleas.
4/1/00. An even closer-up view of the pink azaleas.
4/2/00. This is one of four white azaleas across the front of the house. This is the fourth spring they've been there. They've needed some pruning every year to train their shape.
4/7/00. Just five days later, fully open.
3/29/00. These buds hold such promise. I bought these plants at a grocery store about 10 years ago. They were closing them out at 89 cents apiece. A real bargain.
4/2/00. Here are those buds just 4 days later. Look at all the new growth.
4/8/00. Here are those cheapy azaleas fully open. Reminds me of an orchid.
4/8/00. All five of the cheap azaleas going down the steps. They reach over half-way down the steps. They will need some gentle pruning this year just to get them back off of the steps.
4/11/00. This is a very dark pink--almost magenta--azalea.
4/11/00. This is a coral pink plant, one of several of the same on the other side of the house. These plants appear to have some sort of fungus that doesn't affect its growth, just the leaf appearance.
4/8/00. This white azalea is just down the steps from the coral ones. It usually looks like a giant snowball when fully in bloom.
4/17/00. And here it is when fully in bloom. Just like a big white snowball again this year!
4/18/00. The 25 year old azaleas are still putting out new growth.
4/18/00. This is one of the white azaleas in the front; lots of new growth here.
4/30/00. Coral azaleas on the left side of the house are in full bloom now.
5/2/00. These azaleas need pruning. They're making it difficult to get down the steps.
5/2/00. After pruning, the natural shape is still intact. Pruning also opens the interior of the plant up so it can get better air circulation.
5/25/00. Very early new growth on front white azaleas.
10/7/00. Something's sucking the life out of these front bed azaleas. Spider mites? Will have to investigate further.
4/20/03. Still beautiful after all these years.
