![]() Weigelia florida |
| When weigelias are at their peak in late spring, they are among the most colorful of all shrubs. Each stem is lined with clusters of tubular wide-mouthed flowers an inch or more across. But at any season their arching branches make them graceful bushy plants, and they grow rapidly and have many stems, all of which bear enormous numbers of flowers. The leaves are usually green, but in some varieties are purplish green or edged with creamy white. Old-fashioned weigelia bears pink flowers and grows 9 to 10 feet tall if left unpruned, but modern hybrids offer many colors from white through pink to very dark red and rarely exceed 5 to 6 feet. Weigelias are excellent in shrub borders and are notably resistant to pests. Weigelias grow in Zones 5-9 and so best in full sun but will tolerate light shade. They will grow in almost any soil. Remove dead tips in the spring. Since flowers generally form on the previous season's growth, rather than on new growth, do not prune weigelias until after the flowers have faded. Occasionally, a few blossoms will appear late in the summer on the current season's growth. New plants can be started from softwood cuttings of young growth in late spring or early summer, from semi-hardwood cuttings of more mature growth in mid- or late summer, or from hardwood cuttings of dormant leafless growth in late fall or winter. |
