Cornus florida
To many gardeners dogwoods are the most beautiful of trees. These trees often begin to blossom when they are only 4 to 6 feet tall, and their flowers are so tough that they often stay colorful for three or four weeks. Not only do dogwoods bloom beautifully in the spring, but they sport attractive green leaves all summer, and in the fall, their bright red berries and their deep red and orange leaves usher in fall in grand style. The flowering dogwood is native from New England to Florida and Texas, and is well known to all gardeners. The flowering dogwood can grow to heights of 15 to 30 feet with a spread of 15 to 20 feet.
In nature, flowering dogwoods grow in the edges of woods or under the shade of tall deciduous trees. Dogwoods do best in moist but well-drained acid soil that has been liberally supplemented with leaf mold or peat moss. Dogwoods cannot tolerate drought or constantly wet soil. Pruning should be kept to a minimum, because dogwoods are slow to heal.

Dogwood buds 3/4/00. Dogwood buds are formed the year before.
Dogwood buds are swelling!! That means Spring is on the way 3/11/00. Here, the dogwood blossoms are just beginning to swell.
Won't be long now! 3/17/00. These blooms are coming right along. It won't be long now! A few more warm days and they will be fully open.
Almost there!! 3/29/00. Almost fully open blooms. I almost think this is the prettiest stage for these blossoms.
Fully open blooms 4/2/00. Blooms are fully open now. Nope, this is the prettiest stage.
Perfection 4/4/00 This single dogwood blossom is perfection in nature.
Sweet double daffodil 4/6/00 Here's one of my dogwood trees in full bloom. This tree is about 25 years old, and came up in a flower bed. I made the mistake of having it "professionally" pruned about 7 or 8 years ago. Before they butchered it, it was taller and was being crowded by the tree behind it, but was always gorgeous. It took about 5 years to get back to full bloom.
Leaves come later 4/9/00 Dogwood leaves begin to emerge just as the blooms fully open.
Back deck dogwood in full bloom 4/15/00 Dogwood just outside back deck, in full bloom. This tree grew right there naturally, and never bloomed until we had some trees cut back to add the deck.
Petals are falling 4/17/00 Dogwood petals are falling, leaving the bracts that will become the red berries of fall.
Big mess 4/18/00 Wind plus rain plus dogwood petals equals a mess.
Leafing out 4/27/00 Blossoms are gone, and the entire tree is leafing out.
Full leaf 5/6/00 Fully leafed out here.
Green berries 5/25/00 Green berries have formed and are full size. Nothing much else will happen until the berries turn red in September and the squirrels eat them all.
Leaves turning 7/29/00 Leaves are just beginning to turn red.
Buds 8/3/00 Buds for next year's blossoms are forming now.
Red berries 8/3/00 Berries are also just beginning to turn red. Thought I'd better get a picture before the squirrels get them all.
Red berries 8/20/00 Berries almost red. Expect squirrels any day.
Squirrel 8/25/00 See what I mean?
Red leaves 8/26/00 More leaves turning red.
Missed? 8/26/00 Guess the squirrels missed these. They'll be back.
Berries 'n buds 8/26/00 Berries and buds up close.
Red leaves 10/7/00 Most of the leaves are a burgundy color now. They'll be falling soon; some already have.
Leaves 'n buds 10/7/00 Close up of next year's blossom buds and red leaves. Berries all gone.

Back to Trees.
