Just Planted Detroit Dark Red Beets 3/4/00. I've never had good luck with consistent germination of beet seeds; my experience has been spotty germination. Last year I was told that in order to get good germination, sow the seeds in a furrow, and pour boiling water on the seeds before covering them up. Either I'll get a good crop of beets this year, or I've cooked them before they sprouted. We'll see.
Sprouting well 3/11/00. Beets are beginning to sprout pretty well. Maybe the boiling water did make a difference.
Pitiful!!! 3/30/00 Pretty pathetic showing, after all. Reseeded beets after soaking seeds all day in warm water.
Looking better this time...so far 4/7/00 New seeds are germinating much better.
Two plantings 4/30/00 You can see the difference in the size of the two plantings here. Too bad the first planting didn't germinate well.
Munch, munch 5/30/00 Not many left. I'm obviously not going to get any beets, so I'll just leave these as a sacrifice, and hope it makes the critters leave some other things alone (fingers crossed).
Summary: These beets were doomed from the start. First planting boiled to death, and the second, while germinating moderately well, was decimated by underground varmits. Every beet was eaten from below. Conclusion: Will try a fall planting in a lined bed.
Fall beets 8/13/00. Trying a fall crop of beets, same variety. Planted seed tape this time. Beets are on the left.
Coming up 8/17/00. Poking up already.
Mayday! 8/20/00 Well, so far these beets are coming up better than the spring ones did. Something has been scratching in the beets. Put the wire fencing over the bed to discourage this behavior...
Shade cloth 8/20/00 ...which didn't work, so the shade cloth went on too.
Coming along 8/23/00 Beets coming along nicely.
Thinned 8/23/00 Thinned to stand 2 inches apart here.
Spindly 8/4/00 Lack of sun and lots of rain for the last few days has caused these plants to look a little anemic. Shade cloth removed. Will brew some manure tea and feed them.
Well... 9/26/00 Hmmmmmmmmm. Doesn't look like I'm going to get any beets this year. Planted these too close to the kale, but I'll wait and see what they do. I WILL get beets next spring.
