Danvers Half Long carrot seeds in trench 3/4/00. My yields in the past have been less than satisfactory with recommended rates, so I decided to sow these very thickly. My small space does not allow for long rows spaced apart. I decided I would rather thin heavily if needed, rather than have a sparse crop. Carrot seeds are very tiny, so they are hard to see. Seeds are approximately 2-2½ mm in length.
Carrot seedlings just up 3/23/00. Danvers seedlings just coming up.
Not much to look at here 4/1/00 Carrots thinly germinated. Reseeded in same rows.
No new ones up yet 4/7/00 First planting seedlings are growing; no new seeds up yet.
First new carrot up 4/11/00 Finally, some new carrot seeds are up.
Sprouting much better 4/19/00 Second planting seedlings are coming up and growing better now.
Two plantings 4/30/00 You can see the difference in the two plantings clearly here.
Doing OK 5/21/00 Second planting growing fairly well. First planting has yielded several small carrots from thinning.
Munch a bunch 5/30/00 I guess these carrots will be sacrificial lambs, too.
Summary: This is the first time I've grown this variety. They didn't really stand a chance, due to underground "forces." Neither planting amounted to anything, since before the carrots could get to any size, they were eaten from below. I'll try them again next year, in a lined bed or containers.
