| Growing corn yourself is the only way to get corn fresh enough to have full flavor, because it begins to loose freshness within minutes of being picked. There are many hybrids available, the newest being the sugar enhanced, which are designed to maintain freshness longer than older varieties. Each cornstalk bears one or two ears of corn.
Sweet corn grows best in soil with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0. In most of the U.S. and southern Canada, where frost is expected in winter, sow seeds outdoors in spring when all danger of frost is past. For a continuous supply of fresh sweet corn, plant varieties that mature at different times, or plant at two week intervals up until about 3 months before the first fall frost is due, depending on variety. Fertilize corn when it is about 2 to 4 inches tall, and again when it is 8 to 10 inches tall. |
