Corn planted in cages 4/30/00. Planted 'Early and Often' enhanced corn in square tomato cages. I may have to hand pollinate, due to the small number of plants I'll have, but it's worth it to get a few ears of fresh corn. The cages will keep the corn from being blown over in summer storms.
Breaking ground 5/6/00. 'Early and Often' corn is coming up already! Only 6 days to germinate. At least three seeds up at each corner so far, and some with all four sprouted!
Growing fast 5/10/00. Growing well. Hot weather and watering pay off.
Time to thin 5/14/00. Time to thin the corn sprouts to one per hill.
Thinned 5/14/00. Each hill has been thinned to one sprout each.
Uh-oh 5/14/00. Must have injured this sprout when pulling up the extra sprouts. Probably should have cut them off with scissors instead of pulling them up.
Growing well 5/21/00. Corn growing well. Will need fertilizing and mulching very soon.
Hot Stuff 5/23/00. Maybe this cayenne pepper coating will help deter hungry critters. I sure hope so.
Mulched 5/24/00. Mulched to reduce watering, control weeds, and prevent soil surface from crusting.
Growing well 5/27/00. First planting of corn growing well.
New corn 5/28/00. Second planting of 'Early and Often corn coming up well.
Bad words 5/31/00. Another one bites the dust. Bad words are being said.
W-a-a-a-a 6/2/00. Almost all of this second (and third) planting of corn is gone, pulled down into the soil.
Looking good 6/4/00. First planting is looking good.
Second planting x 3 6/12/00. This is the third attempt at a second planting, and so far there's good germination.
One day 6/13/00. What a difference a day makes.
Baby corn 6/13/00. An ear of corn in the making.
Tassels 6/16/00. Beginning to tassle.
Silking 6/16/00. Beginning to silk. Pollen from the tassles will fall on the silks (one for every grain) and hopefully pollinate each grain of corn on the ear.
Standing tall 6/16/00. Growing well; tall and straight.
So far, so good 6/16/00. So far, so good for the "second" planting.
Second thinning 6/20/00. Second planting has been thinned--with scissors this time!
Doing OK 6/28/00. Doing well.
Safe? 7/3/00. We've got our fingers crossed that this planting is now safe from the underground varmits.
Good start 7/8/00. Third planting is off to a good start.
Good eatin' 7/10/00. Ear filled out well.
History 7/10/00. Third planting is history. Can't plant any more 'Early and Often' this year. I'm out of seeds.
Coming along 7/11/00. Second planting doing well.
Growing 7/16/00. Second planting growing really well.
Ear developing 7/16/00. First ears developing.
Tassels 7/16/00. Beginning to tassel.
silks 7/20/00. Beginning to silk.
Tall 7/23/00. Standing tall. Ears have formed.
Summary: Got a few ears from the second successful planting. Very tasty corn. Will try it again next year.
