![]() Cucumis sativus |
| Cucumbers grow on vines that spread 6 to 8 feet if allowed to trail on the ground. They can be trained to climb a fence in a small garden. Bush varieties do not trail, and are also suitable for the small garden or containers.
Cucumbers grow best in a soil with a pH of 5.5 to 7.0. In most of the U.S. and southern Canada, sow seeds indoors about 3 weeks before the last expected frost. When all danger of frost is past, set into the garden. Fertilize about every two to three weeks, and keep the soil moist to prevent the plant from wilting. Cut all cucumbers while still dark green, even if you can't use them--if the fruit turn yellow, the plants stop producing. |
