![]() Lactuca sativa |
| There are many types of lettuce. Head lettuce requires at least two months of relatively cool temperatures. Other types, such as loose-leaf and butter head, grow well in warmer temperatures. Plant in full sun in spring and fall, and in partial shade in the summer. Start head lettuce about a month before the last spring frost. When seedlings are 2-3 inches tall, harden off and plant in the garden about 12 inches apart. Sow seeds of loose-leaf lettuce directly in the garden, and continue to sow every 2 weeks until maximum daytime temperatures are expected to reach 80º. Sow seed sparingly ½ inch deep and thin to 6-8 inches apart. Fertilize every 3 weeks, and keep the soil moist. |
