4/30/00. I planted these seeds directly into the garden. I sprinkled the seeds as evenly as possible, then just scratched the soil up, covering the seeds randomly. I did not add more soil to ensure coverage.

Simpson lettuce already up! 5/4/00. 'Black Seeded Simpson' lettuce is up already--only 4 days after planting seeds.
Growing well 5/14/00. Growing well, but since the beans didn't come up, there won't be any shade for this lettuce. I think I'll plant more inside another teepee in another bed. Will provide shade for this planting to see how it does.
Soon be eating this 5/21/00. This lettuce is really doing well. Temperatures have been pretty agreeable for the last couple of weeks, except for a couple of days. I think we'll be eating this soon.
Second planting 5/28/00. Second planting of 'Black Seeded Simpson' lettuce is up already. Will need to shade both plantings soon to see how long they will last in the heat.
In the shade 6/13/00. Shade cloth in place. Extended harvest a few days, I think.
Summary: Despite being planted rather late, this old standby performed well until the really hot weather arrived. Will plant again next year, using the same method, which worked well.
Fall planting 10/29/00. I couldn't wait. Decided to see how some of this would do in the cold frame overwinter. Here's the little patch already seeded.
Cold frame 10/29/00. Cold frame in place and working properly.
Sprouted 11/4/00. Sprouted already.
Growing 11/12/00. Growing fairly well, considering.
Fall planting 11/20/00. Bigger, but a little leggy--not enough sun here, due to those blasted trees next door. Next year, I'll try to get this into a sunnier spot.
Cold cold frame 11/20/00. Light dusting of snow on the cold frame.
Not bad 12/16/00. Got to about 1" tall before really cold weather hit. I figure at the least, I'll have a head start in the spring.
Growing again 1/31/01. Doubled in size in the January thaw.
Ready to eat 3/10/01. Ready to eat, a couple of months earlier than normal.
Summary: Very dependable lettuce. The coldframe experiment is counted as a success.
