This is what the onion sets look like. They're are about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch in diameter.
3/11/00 I planted these red onion sets with just the tips of the bulbs sticking out of the soil. I'm using the areas around the bins in which I planted potatoes, to make use of all available space.

3/29/00 Red onions are up and range any where from 1-2 inches in height.
4/15/00 Growing slowly and looking very healthy.
4/24/00 Still slow, but still growing.
4/30/00 Someone had red onions for dinner.
| Summary: Red onions were pretty much a disaster, unless you were a chipmunk. Chipmunks ate almost all of the bulbs. Lack of growth probably due to not enough room in the potato bed. Will try again next year, put will provide more space. Perhaps more bone meal would have been beneficial, but I think they got enough fertilizer.
