3/4/00 I planted the Vidalia type onion plants in the same beds I plan to plant tomatoes, in the interest of conserving space. Usually I plant tomatoes alone in their beds, but I'm trying these together this year. These plants are considered good companions, so they should do well. Spacing is about 3 inches apart, a little closer than is recommended.

3/11/00 We can now see some new growth on these plants.

3/21/00 Vidalia type onion plants are growing well. Height: 8-10 inches. I'll start to feed them regularly now; the size of the tops determines the size of the onion bulb at maturity.

4/7/00 Vidalias continue growing well. Height: 10-12 inches. Some are as big as 1/2 inch in diameter.
4/7/00 Drats!!! Neighbor dog insists on walking in my garden beds, despite having a yard to walk on. I doubt this one will make it, but I'll leave it for now.

4/18/00 The injured plant recovered nicely, and is growing well, along with all the others.
5/6/00 Really doing well. Tops are growing and average about 3/4 of an inch in diameter where they meet the bulb. Feeding every two weeks.
5/17/00 Bulbs have started to grow. Can't wait to see how big they get. I don't usually have really big onions; they're medium sized at best, but so delicious.

5/21/00 Very healthy looking onions.
6/2/00 This onion is one of the largest ones, and is close to three inches in diameter.
6/4/00 When 2/3 of the tops have fallen over, I'll knock over the rest.
6/10/00 All the tops down. Will pull onions in a couple of days.

6/12/00 Very pleased with this harvest.
