Early Yellow Globe onion sets This is what the onion sets look like. They're about 3/4 of an inch in diameter.
Just Planted Early Yellow Globe onion sets 3/11/00 I planted these yellow onion sets with just the tips of the bulbs sticking out of the soil. I'm using the areas around the bins in which I planted potatoes, to make use of all available space.
Yellow onions up and running 3/29/00 Yellow onions are up and range any where from 2-4 inches in height.
Bone meal spread around yellow onions 4/4/00 I spread bone meal around onions and other root crops.
Looking good 4/15/00 So far, these yellow onions are looking pretty good.
Tops growing well 4/30/00 Tops are growing well to this point.
I hope it was good 5/14/00 I hope whatever ate this enjoyed it. I found this stalk pulled down inside a hole in the bed.
Going to seed 5/16/00 Noticed several yellow onions are going to seed. Not a good sign. Pulled a couple and I can see they're not going to do anything. Bulbs are hardly bigger than when they were planted. Will pull them all tomorrow.
Summary: Yellow onions were pretty much a disaster, unless you were a chipmunk. Chipmunks ate about half of the bulbs, and the rest grew only tops, then started setting seed pods. When that happened I knew they were not going to do any more. Lack of growth probably due to not enough room in the potato bed. Will try again next year, put will provide more space. Perhaps more bone meal would have been beneficial, but I think they got enough fertilizer.
