Bean teepees 4/30/00. After trying different trellis designs that didn't work as well as I had hoped, I tried this bean teepee technique. It works quite well and I've now used it for several years. I planted two teepees in each of two beds, with six seeds around each leg.
Breaking ground 5/6/00. 'Kentucky Blue' snap beans are coming up already! Only 6 days to germinate. At least five seeds up at each pole so far, and some with all six sprouted!
True leaves 5/7/00. In just one day, the earliest sprouts are putting out their first pair of true leaves.
Growing well 5/10/00. Vigorous growth here.
Looking good 5/23/00. Growing really well. Should soon start to run up the teepee poles.
Tendrils growing 5/24/00. This tendril will grab the teepee leg soon.
Tendrils clinging 5/28/00. Tendrils are clinging and climbing well.
Looking good!! 6/2/00. 'Kentucky Blue' plants continue to grow well--looking very healthy.
Buds 6/7/00. Blossom buds have made an appearance.
Blooms 6/12/00. First blooms.
Deer damage 6/12/00. Breakfast buffet for the deer?
Looking good!! 6/13/00. Climbing the teepee poles.
Lotsa blooms 6/14/00. Lots of blooms on all plants.
Filling in 6/16/00. Filling in nicely.
Babies 6/18/00. Seems like the blossoms turned into beans overnight.
Nice 6/22/00. Almost ready to pick.
Bean beetle larvae 7/1/00. Slight infestation of bean beetles--no significant damage done so far.
Looking not so good 7/8/00. Beginning to look a little puny. Been watering nightly if there's no rain. Production has fallen to almost nothing.
A few new blossom buds 7/9/00. A few new blossom buds coming along. Maybe I'll get a new flush of growth here.
Summary: Disappointed in these beans. Started out really great, with quite a few beans. Within about 3 weeks, though, they were gone, unlike my experience with 'Blue Lake' which kept producing over many weeks. Will not plant these again unless I can't find 'Blue Lake' pole beans. They were very nice beans, with a good flavor, but not productive enough to plant again.
