All wrapped up 5/13/00. Here's what the sweetpotato plants looked like when I bought them at the Southern States Cooperative.
This is gonna grow? 5/14/00. Here's one sweetpotato slip. Doesn't look like much, does it? I am assured this will turn into a sweetpotato plant.
Best looking plant 5/14/00. This is the best looking plant of the entire bunch. Actually, I think it was two plants still joined at the very bottom for about an inch. I debated about whether to separate them or not and decided against it.
The worst looking plant 5/14/00. This is the worst looking plant in the bunch. It'll be interesting to see what difference starting size has on overall performance.
Porto Rico bed 5/14/00. Porto Rico sweetpotato bed. There are twenty-three plants, and a bunch that I heeled-in as spares in case any don't make it.
Porto Rico bed 5/21/00. Porto Rico sweetpotato bed one week later. You can tell a definite difference.
New Growth 5/21/00. Every plant has some new growth like this.
Worst looking one now 5/21/00. Here's what the worst looking plant looks like after one week.
Best looking plant 5/21/00. Here's what the best looking plant looks like now.
Coming along 6/2/00. Growing slowly but surely.
Coming along 6/13/00. Seems like they're growing very slowly, but since this is the first time for sweetpotatoes for me, I have no experience with which to compare.
Running 6/14/00. Finally starting to run.
Alright! 6/16/00. OK, I can see a difference now.
Reaching out 6/22/00. Beginning to "reach out and touch" each other.
Running away 6/28/00. Some runners are now over 2 feet long and starting to attach to the soil.
Almost covered 7/11/00. The bed is almost entirely covered with vines now.
Spreading 7/27/00. Overflowing the bed now.
Deer banquet? 8/2/00. Deer sampling the vines?
Spreading more 8/8/00. Still growing, and growing, and growing. Hope there's something underneath the vines.
Kudzu? 9/4/00. Sweetpotatoes, or kudzu?
Harvest 10/3/00. Sweetpotatoe harvest. Right at 1 bushel total.
Range of sizes 10/3/00. Many different sizes and shapes.
Summary: Pretty pleased with the 'Porto Rico' harvest. At least, they are supposed to be 'Porto Rico' but they seem to have two different skin colors and I don't know what this means. One bushel from this bed seems like a good amount to me. Many different sizes, from very large to very small to very short to very long. Will try to keep some of the smaller ones to bed in the spring for slips.
