Lycopersicum esculentum

Tomatoes are the most popular vegetable for the home garden, and are divided into three main types: determinate (stop bearing once they reach full size--stems 12-18 inches long), semideterminate (cease production when stems become 18-24 inches long), and indeterminate (grow and bear indefinitely unless killed by frost or disease).
Plant tomato plants in the garden when night temperatures are expected to remain above 60 degrees F. Too much fertilizer will result in vigorous vine growth and decreased fruit production.
