4/14/01. Ira is just beginning work on the pond. First chore: cleaning out old plants and mulch.
4/14/01. Since we're planning on building up the surrounding bed, Ira's building up the pond walls to match.
4/14/01. Walls and shelves are beginning to take shape now.
4/14/01. Making sure everything is level.
4/14/01. Almost finished shaping the pond--can really tell what shape it's going to have now.
4/14/01. Unrolling the liner. Now we're cooking!
4/14/01. Fitting the liner around the waterfall tub and the shape of the pond.
4/14/01. Starting to place the stones.
4/14/01. Starting the waterfall stones.
4/14/01. Filling with water for the first time. This will be pumped out later, after the liner is seated and the stones washed off.
4/14/01. Placing the pump cord and tubing to the filter.
4/14/01. Seating the main shelf of stones.
4/14/01. Placing the fall rock.
4/14/01. All stones in place. Dirty water has been pumped out and is being replaced with clean water, and waterlilies are in place. The water is still a little murky, but should clear in a few days.
4/14/01. Left side planting pocket.
4/14/01. Right side planting pocket.
4/14/01. The sound of the waterfall is so soothing and peaceful. Looking forward to many hours of relaxation here.
4/15/01. Rubber ducky seems right at home, doesn't he?
4/15/01. We'll try the sundial here for a while and see how we like it.
5/23/01. Hope these frogs bring us good luck with the real thing.
10/16/01. Pond covered with bird netting to keep falling leaves out.
10/16/01. Netting anchored with bricks.
10/16/01. The watchful kitty has been pressed into service to help anchor the bird netting.
12/30/01. Cold enough to form a light layer of ice.
1/5/02. Temps in the teens for a few days makes for a thicker layer of ice. Still plenty of open water for oxygen, though.
1/5/02. Part of the waterfall froze as well.
1/5/02. Later in the day, the sun has started to melt some of the ice.
3/30/02. The bird netting certainly helped keep leaves out of the pond in the fall and winter. Now, however, smaller items are floating around. The solution: fiberglas screening. Pros: keeps most smaller objects out. Cons: blocks light and restricts plant growth.
3/30/02. Very effective for keeping this kind of thing out.
