4/12/01. Here's what this bed looked like pre-pond. I decided last fall to totally renovate this bed, but didn't know exactly what I wanted to do, so I did nothing!
4/12/01. Another view of a bed needing serious renovation. There was a large stand of creeping lilyturf around the curve of this bed, that had become invasive. I gave it away to the pond builder in exchange for digging it up and hauling it away, saving me lots of work.

5/5/01. The first thing we did was build a support dam around the pond that served two purposes: providing support for the raised walls of the pond, and something to which to staple the hardware cloth lining.
5/7/01. Lined with hardware cloth. If I want to keep the voles, etc., from eating the roots out from under just about every plant I have, everything has to be in raised, lined beds.
5/7/01. These earth staples keep the overlapping edges nailed down.
5/11/01. It took a little over 3 cubic yards of compost to fill this bed.
5/11/01. Another view of the filled bed. Don't worry, those lights won't be staying there.
5/11/01. I decided I needed stepping stones throughout the bed to facilitate weeding, planting, etc.
5/15/01. Planting begun. Will add more as I am inspired.
5/15/01. Another view of the planted bed.
5/15/01. Mulched with shredded leaves and wet down.
5/15/01. Another view of mulched bed.
5/15/01. And yet another view.
5/23/01. This guy looks pretty real, doesn't he?
12/22/01. The pond bed has been put to bed for the winter.
5/27/02. Plants are filling in well.
5/27/02. Another view.
7/12/02. Filling in more.
8/24/02. Even at the end of a long, hot summer, it's looking pretty good.
8/24/02. Another view.
